Desc: Modoc: Directed by Matthew Harrison Tedford, Kristen Brown. With Stephanie Foo. A rugged, agrarian landscape on the California-Oregon border bears witness to the region's violent past. This cinematic essay, narrated by Stephanie Foo (from This American Life), meditates on the landscapes that tell, reinvent, and obscure the history of the nineteenth-century Modoc War. After colonists from the east seized their land, several Modoc families fled to an otherworldly volcanic fortress to escape persecution from the United States government. Led by Kintpuash, these families fought the U.S. Army for several months before hunger, internal politics, and the force of Manifest Destiny began to strain resistance.
